Definition
Series A is typically the first priced equity round led by a fund, after seed. Investors want evidence the model can repeat: a wedge, early unit economics, and a team that can hire. The cheque is meant to scale what already works, not to find the idea.
In the room
How the word shows up in a real conversation.
A SaaS company has ₹1.2 crore ARR, NRR above 100%, and a CAC payback under 12 months. A fund leads a Series A to hire sales in two more cities. That is A. Raising A on a slide and a prototype is a mislabelled seed.
Common mistake
Calling any large cheque “Series A.” The letter describes the stage of evidence, not the size of the wire.
